Our take

Hims is a useful comparison for readers who want app-based care and a clearly stated recurring membership. Its price is not a complete medication budget, and the membership and prescription can have different billing arrangements.

Reasons to look closer

  • Published recurring membership price
  • Separate medication and membership terms
  • App-based follow-up support

Keep in mind

Canceling a medication plan does not automatically stop membership charges.

The costs at a glance

Published price reference$149/month
Ongoing weight-loss membership
MedicationSeparate charge; treatment dependent
CommitmentAutomatic monthly membership renewal
Important context$39 first month. Medication is extra and may be billed monthly or upfront.

Build a two-part budget

Hims lists a $39 introductory membership month followed by $149 monthly, excluding medication. The prescription may have its own monthly or upfront payment. Our comparison therefore uses the recurring care fee rather than adding an unverified medication price. Before enrolling, put the first payment and first renewal side by side; a discounted introduction can otherwise make two programs look closer in price than their ongoing bills actually are.

Check who handles each payment

The terms identify arrangements where Gifthealth bills for medication directly. Those medication cancellations and billing questions go to Gifthealth, while an active Hims membership remains necessary for platform care. This makes the merchant on the receipt worth checking. Our advice is to save both payment schedules and the correct support channel before purchase, particularly when prescription fulfillment involves a different company from the service collecting your membership fee.

Treat cancellation as two separate decisions

The subscription terms require cancellation at least two days before the scheduled billing date. The first membership month is nonrefundable, and medication shipped to you is not refundable. Partial-period refunds are discretionary. Stopping the medication plan alone leaves membership active. We would set a reminder earlier than the cutoff and retain the confirmation for each plan. A canceled shipment, a canceled prescription, and a canceled membership should not be assumed to mean the same thing.

Choose the communication format deliberately

The FAQ says a video visit may not be required in every state and that response times vary. That is a practical distinction for someone who prefers scheduled conversations. Ask whether your care will use messaging, live appointments, or both, and how an unanswered question is escalated. We have not tested the app or contacted clinicians, so the availability of a messaging feature is not evidence of a particular response speed or quality.

Where we would place Hims on a shortlist

Compare Hims with other membership-plus-prescription services using the same medication pathway and the same number of days. A low medication-only advertisement from another company is not enough to identify a cheaper complete plan. Hims belongs on a shortlist when the care format suits your preferences and the combined written quote fits your budget. We would resolve state availability, dose-related price changes, pharmacy arrangements, and renewal dates before making that decision. This is a commercial review, not a personal treatment recommendation.

Before you sign up

  • Who bills my prescription, and on what schedule?
  • What date must I cancel to avoid the next charge?
  • Does my medication quote change with dose?
