Check your existing benefits before buying another membership
MD Live offers a different starting point from a direct-pay medication bundle: eligible members can use virtual primary care through participating health plans. If you already have those benefits, this is worth checking before paying for another subscription. The public page says some participating-plan copays can be as low as zero dollars, but that is a visit claim with eligibility conditions. It does not price medication, outside testing or every service available under the MD Live name. My first step would be to verify that the plan includes Primary Care and identify the out-of-pocket Routine Care charge.
Routine Care is the relevant appointment type
MD Live explicitly says its clinicians can prescribe GLP-1s such as Wegovy and Zepbound for weight management when appropriate. It also limits that prescribing to Routine Care visits, excludes other visit types and says the medicines are unavailable in certain states. That is an important boundary for anyone familiar with the company's urgent-care service. Do not book a convenient urgent-care appointment expecting the same prescribing pathway. Ask support which service your benefits actually include and whether weight-management treatment is available where you will be located. A recognizable platform name does not make every appointment interchangeable. Bring our telehealth appointment checklist to the clinical conversation.
A visit copay and a medication copay are different bills
MD Live's weight-management explanation says visit and prescription costs depend on health-plan benefits. A covered clinical conversation can still lead to a prescription with a deductible, coinsurance or a coverage exclusion. Request a pharmacy-benefit estimate for the specific product and indication, then include any laboratory costs in the comparison. I would avoid putting a universal monthly amount beside this provider because the meaningful number is plan-specific. A patient with useful existing benefits could pay very differently from someone whose coverage excludes the medication, even if both see the same type of clinician through the platform. Use our guide to GLP-1 deductible and coinsurance costs to separate the components of the estimate.
Prior authorization should have an owner and a timeline
MD Live describes clinician-supported weight-management care rather than guaranteed pharmacy coverage. Before the appointment, ask who submits any prior authorization, how documents are collected and how you are notified if the plan requests more information. Bring previous treatment records and the insurer's stated requirements when available. This is a workflow question, not a reason to assume approval. If coverage is denied, ask the clinician what clinically appropriate alternatives can be considered and what further documentation is useful. Keep a cash-pay alternative in a separate comparison so an insurance delay does not pressure you into accepting a package without understanding its terms. Our prior-authorization guide helps organize the insurer and prescriber questions.
Continuity is the main practical strength
The Primary Care FAQ describes choosing a dedicated doctor and returning to that clinician for routine care. It also outlines laboratory review, condition monitoring and referrals when needed. For someone managing several ongoing health concerns, that continuity may matter more than obtaining the cheapest isolated prescription consultation. Ask how follow-up is scheduled, whether another clinician covers absences and what information can be shared with your existing primary-care office. I would compare the actual appointment access rather than assume every refill includes an immediate visit. A continuing relationship is valuable when its responsibilities and response routes are clear to the patient.
Medication fulfillment is separate from the virtual visit
The GLP-1 FAQ establishes a prescribing route, not a bundled medication shipment sold at one nationwide price. Ask where an approved prescription can be filled, who handles stock problems and whether the pharmacy can provide an exact cash or insured estimate before dispensing. If the product is unavailable, discuss next steps with the clinician rather than substituting another formulation independently. Someone moving from a cash-pay compound program should bring the original label and dose history for review. The new appointment is an opportunity to reassess the treatment plan; it is not a promise to reproduce another provider's prescription automatically. Use the provider switching guide to organize records and refill timing.
Appointment cancellation has a specific cutoff
MD Live's Primary Care FAQ lists a twenty-five-dollar cancellation fee for Routine Care appointments canceled within two hours and for wellness visits canceled within twenty-four hours. It describes exceptions for Medicare or Medicaid members and possible emergency or technical waivers. Confirm the rule shown during your booking because the visit type matters. This is different from canceling a medication subscription: the financial issue is the appointment reservation, while a pharmacy has its own dispensing terms. Put the visit in your calendar and retain any cancellation confirmation. A low covered copay does not mean a missed appointment has no potential charge.
Who should favor this route?
MD Live is especially useful to investigate when an existing health plan includes Routine Care and you want ongoing primary-care involvement. It is less useful as a simple public cash-price comparison because eligibility and medication costs are personalized to benefits. I would proceed only after confirming the appropriate service, state access and separate pharmacy estimate. If the benefit is unavailable, compare a direct-pay program with the full clinical and medication cost visible. The decision is not just whether MD Live can prescribe a GLP-1 in general; it is whether your available benefit provides the right visit, product pathway and follow-up for your situation. For a separately priced alternative, read our LifeMD review and add medication to the program fee.
Before you sign up
- Does my plan include Routine Care for weight management?
- What are my visit, lab and pharmacy costs separately?
- Can the clinician support the required prior authorization and follow-up?
Use the answers to compare the exact offer with another provider. A service review cannot determine whether a medication is appropriate for you; that decision belongs with your clinician.
